SUMMER 2017
DAY 1/ Saturday 24 JUNE (night: Ukiah, CA)--
In the morning, Jacen, Jaina, Zane, and
many family and friends met at
Chuck-E-Cheese in Visalia to CELEBRATE
turning 6 and turning 4!!! 12:30 PM, I began
my 17-day roadtrip. Travel and stops today
include--CA 99, Merced, Hwy 12 through the
delta, Rio Del, almost Napa, Sonoma, Santa
Rosa, Cloverdale, Hopeland, and Motel 6 in
Ukiah, CA. Arrived about 7:30 PM, checked in,
cruised the town looking for a place to eat
and settled on Carl's Jr. on State Street. Masonite plant is gone and a couple I spoke with said there are
more homeless per capita in Ukiah than any other community in CA! Wow!

DAY 2/Sunday 25 JUNE (night: Crescent City, CA)--
I got an early start driving US 101. Fond memories driving from
Ukiah to Redwood Valley, on up to Willits, & north. The highway now
bypasses Willits, so I got off at the north end of town and drove
back. Our store @ 1637 S. Main is now home to Northwest
Sporting Goods.The duplexes we managed are a bit overgrown.
In general, the town looks nice; part of me still lives there.
Beautiful drive and memorable spots enroute include Laytonville, Leggett, Benbow, Fortuna, Eureka,
Arcata, and Crescent City....
I arrived in Crescent City shortly after noon and joined longtime-friend Margie Rouge for an afternoon
of sight-seeing. She and I were in the Biola College Sailing Club and co-directed the Christian Sailing Club
from 1974 until 1977. She continues to "sail" with her charter school-- Uncharted Shores (FB). Lunch by the
water, tsunami discussion, touring via Miata, hiking in Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park, and
dinner downtown were highlights. Had a great time, Margie! Thanks!

DAY 3/Monday 26 JUNE (night: Aberdeen, WA)--
Early today, I began my journey along the Oregon coast; it's a long
drive:-) Highlights: Brookings, lighthouses (one I stopped at), gas @
Fred Meyer, Florence, and the Tillamook Cheese factory (w) in
Tillamook, OR; I took the self-guided tour. Late afternoon I got to
Astoria, OR (pics) and the Astoria Column. I last climbed this when
I was in high school or early college. They now sell little wooden
airplanes you can launch from the top (info) Climb to the top?
Cross from Oregon to Washington, I continued driving until, 12 hours
after leaving Crescent City, I arrived in Aberdeen, WA.

DAY 16/Sunday JULY 9 (night: Porterville, CA)--
Twain Harte to the Yosemite Valley--in 2014, Andie and I
hiked from the floor to Glacier Point via the 4-Mile trail;
in 2015 we hiked from the floor to the top of Yosemite
Falls. Then to Wawona, Yosemite Sugar Pine Railroad,
town of Oakhurst, Chateau du Sureau photo, Sweet
Tomatoes in Fresno, and home.
